How to Enable Developer Mode on Chromebook (2026): The Ultimate Guide

Share

Want to unlock the full potential of your Chromebook? Enabling Developer Mode is the key to breaking out of the “browser-only” ecosystem. It gives you Root Access, the ability to Sideload Android Apps (APKs), and access to the full Linux shell.

In 2026, Developer Mode is essential for enthusiasts who want to run Local LLMs, install custom Linux distros, or use advanced hardware tools.

But be warned: This reduces security and requires a full device wipe.

Read Before You Proceed

  • Total Data Wipe: Enabling Developer Mode triggers a Powerwash. Back up your local files to Google Drive first.
  • Security Risk: Verified Boot is disabled. You lose the OS “self-healing” protection against malware.
  • Warranty Void: Google does not support software issues caused by Developer Mode.

How to Enable Developer Mode

Follow these steps exactly. The process takes about 10–15 minutes.

  1. Turn off your Chromebook completely.
  2. Press and hold Esc + Refresh (↻) keys, then tap the Power button.
  3. Release the keys when the “Recovery” screen appears (white screen saying “ChromeOS is missing or damaged”).
  4. Press Ctrl + D on your keyboard.
  5. You will see a prompt asking to confirm. Press Enter.
  6. The system will reboot and beep. Wait for the transition process. Do not turn it off.

Pro Tip: Every time you reboot, you will see the “OS Verification is OFF” warning. Press Ctrl + D to skip it.

Ctrl + Alt + T Launch the Crosh terminal.
shell Enter the full Linux Bash shell (type inside Crosh).

Can You Enable Dev Mode on a School Chromebook?

If your Chromebook is “Enterprise Enrolled” (managed by a school or company), Developer Mode is usually blocked by the administrator.

Why “Hacks” Don’t Work:

Disabling the battery or removing screws usually fails on modern devices (2020+) due to the Titan C security chip. Attempting to bypass this often damages the hardware.

The Solution: If you own a used/decommissioned device, ask the administrator to “Deprovision” it. Once released, you can wipe it and enable Developer Mode normally.

How to Disable Developer Mode

Returning to safety (Verified Boot) is simple, but remember: this will wipe your data again.

  1. Reboot your Chromebook.
  2. When you see the “OS Verification is OFF” warning, press the Spacebar.
  3. Press Enter to confirm.
  4. Your device will “Powerwash” and reboot into standard ChromeOS.
