As a tech journalist, I am excited to share the story of how the Polícia Militar do Estado de São Paulo (PMESP) in Brazil is using Android Enterprise to enhance public safety. With 80,000 officers on the streets, the PMESP needed a reliable and secure mobile solution to manage their fleet and deliver superior service to the public. They chose Android Enterprise, which enabled them to deploy 10,000 Terminal Portátil de Dados (TPD) devices into police vehicles, equipping every officer with a dedicated, secure mobile tool.

The TPD devices are fully managed devices that house critical applications for criminal and vehicle research, preparing police reports, and issuing traffic tickets. Android Enterprise enables centralized device and app management, simplifying operations for the IT teams. They can push essential apps like Google Maps from their headquarters via Urmobo’s Mobile Device Management (MDM), ensuring all 10,000 TPD devices receive the update in just minutes.

The success of the Android Enterprise TPD devices went beyond core functions. Officers became comfortable using the devices and started coming up with new ideas for using Android features to improve productivity or help citizens. This led to the discovery of the potential of Android Remote Lock, a built-in security feature that empowers officers to help victims secure their personal data and prevent its misuse by criminals.

When a phone is stolen or lost, officers can access the Remote Lock web page using their TPDs, enter the citizen’s phone number, and lock the device screen, preventing someone else from accessing or misusing the personal data. They can also track the stolen device’s location immediately, with the victim’s permission, using the Find Hub guest mode on TPDs. This feature has been used by PMESP officers more than 5,000 times since its implementation in June 2025.

The Remote Lock feature has received positive feedback from both officers and citizens. A video tutorial created by the PMESP has gained over 1 million views, and officers report seeing the relief on victims’ faces when they realize their personal data will be safe from criminals. The PMESP believes this solution can be replicated by police departments across the world and invites other organizations to discover the power of always-on Android security. With the success of Android Enterprise and Remote Lock, the PMESP is setting an example for other law enforcement agencies to follow, and it will be exciting to see how this technology continues to evolve and improve public safety.
