Gemini Can Now Use Your Google Maps Saved Places, and Argon Is Replacing Deep Think
Gemini can now look at your Google Maps searches and saved places when it answers you. The Gemini app announced the change on X on October 22, the same week Personal Intelligence reached Android Auto. Google is also quietly telling AI Ultra subscribers that Deep Think is on the way out. Here is what changed and how to turn it on.
1. What Gemini can now do with Google Maps
Before: Personal Intelligence lets Gemini use your emails, files, photos and more to tailor answers without you spelling everything out. Since launch, its Search services connection has let Gemini use Search, Maps, Shopping, News, Flights and Hotels.
Now: the Maps part goes further, adding your own Maps searches and the places you have saved. Google’s example is a list of restaurants you have been meaning to try. Ask “What’s the best spot for after my meetings today?” and Gemini checks where your last meeting is in Calendar, then picks saved places near it.

2. How to turn it on
- Open the Gemini app or go to gemini.google.com/personalization-settings in Chrome.
- Turn on Personal Intelligence if you have not already.
- Connect Google Search services (this covers Maps) and Google Workspace (this covers Calendar).
- Ask Gemini a question about your day or your saved places, the way you would ask a friend.
Who can use it: Google says it is for eligible users with Personal Intelligence, and its Connected Apps help page lists the details. If you already turned on Personal Intelligence for Gemini on Android Auto and connected Search services, you may not need to change anything.
Privacy: the same help page says data from connected apps can be seen by human reviewers and, with Keep Activity on, used to improve Google’s AI models. You can disconnect any app or delete your Gemini activity at any time. If your saved places include somewhere you would rather keep private, leave Maps disconnected.
3. Gemini 4 Argon will replace Deep Think
The notice: according to 9to5Google, Google is telling AI Ultra subscribers in the Gemini app that Gemini 4 Argon will “replace Deep Think soon”, and to “Switch to Argon when you need deeper reasoning.”
What Deep Think is today: a thinking level in Gemini 3.1 Pro that sits above High, Medium and Low. It was last updated in February.
What is unclear: the notice does not say whether Gemini 3.1 Pro itself is being retired or only the Deep Think mode. Google has not given a date either.

Our take
The Maps change is small on paper but useful in practice. Most of us have a pile of saved places we never get around to, and having Gemini match them to your day is the kind of help that makes Personal Intelligence feel personal. Just think about what is in your saved list before you connect it. As for Deep Think, moving everyone to Argon makes sense, since one strong reasoning model is easier to understand than a special mode on an older one.
Gemini also works inside Google Maps on Apple CarPlay now. Here is how it helps while you drive.
