Gemini on Android Auto Can Now Tap Your Gmail, Calendar and Photos

Share

Gemini in your car just got a lot more personal. Google says Personal Intelligence, the feature that lets Gemini use what is in your Google apps, is now rolling out on Android Auto. That means you can ask about your flight, your next appointment or a place from one of your photos, and get a real answer without touching your phone. Cars with Google built-in get it in the coming months.

Key Takeaways: Personal Intelligence in the car
What it is: Gemini can pull details from Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, YouTube and Search to answer questions about your own plans.
Where: rolling out now on Android Auto, and coming to cars with Google built-in (Android Automotive) in the coming months.
Opt-in: nothing is connected until you turn it on, and you can switch it off anytime in your Gemini settings. If you already use it in the Gemini app, it follows you into the car.
Who gets it: personal Google accounts, age 18 and up. Not Workspace business, enterprise or education accounts.
Not everywhere: it is not available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland, the UK or Nigeria for now.

1. What changes when you drive

The short version: Gemini already works on Android Auto as a voice assistant. In its announcement, Google says Personal Intelligence now lets it look things up in your own Google apps, so you can speak naturally and skip the context. You do not need to say an address or dig out a confirmation email first.

Two jobs: Google says the feature is good at two things: finding a specific detail (from an email, a photo or a place you saved in Google Maps), and reasoning across several sources to answer a bigger question.

2. Five things you can ask

Two questions at once: on the way to the airport, ask “What’s my flight gate? And is my flight on time?” Gemini finds the booking and checks for delays, and answers both in one go.

Picks that fit you: in a town you do not know, say “Find me an indoor restaurant along my route that matches my usual vibe.” Google says if you are vegetarian, the shortlist will reflect that.

Plain-language directions: “Take me to my doctor’s appointment” works without you remembering the street address.

Places from your photos: “Find the car wash from the photo I took last week and navigate there” saves you scrolling through your camera roll or pulling over.

Pick up where you left off: “Take me to the coffee shop we were talking about yesterday” lets Gemini work out which place you meant.

3. Who gets it and where

Already using it? if you turned on Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app, Google says it carries over to the car automatically. If not, you can set it up anytime in your Gemini settings and choose which apps Gemini can use.

4. What about privacy?

Off by default: Google says your apps are not connected until you switch Personal Intelligence on, and you can turn it off at any time in your Gemini settings.

In built-in cars: cars with Google built-in only share personal answers when you are in the car with your phone connected. That matters if you share the car with family.

If you say no: everything else keeps working. Navigation, music, calls and general questions all still work, the answers just will not be tailored to you.

Our take

This is the kind of AI feature that actually earns its place in a car. Asking for your flight gate beats picking up a phone at a red light. It is the same Personal Intelligence that already works in the Gemini app and AI Mode, as 9to5Google points out, so if you have used it in the Gemini app you will know what to expect. The catch is reach: UK and European drivers, and anyone on a work or school account, are left out for now. Gemini keeps changing fast, from Gems turning into skills to bigger models like Gemini Argon, so expect this feature to grow too.
