OpenAI’s GPT Models Are Coming to Google Antigravity and Google Cloud

Share

Google has agreed to sell OpenAI’s GPT models to its own cloud customers, and Google Antigravity is next. In an October 21 post, Google Cloud said OpenAI’s newest models are rolling out now in its model garden, with OpenAI models coming soon to Antigravity, the AI coding app that also runs on Googlebooks. Here is what is available today, what is still on the way and what it means if you code on a Googlebook.

Key Takeaways: OpenAI models on Google
Three GPT models: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are rolling out in Google Cloud’s model garden, in private preview for select enterprise customers.
Codex works too: starting now, customers can point their local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows at Google’s Gemini platform for inference.
Antigravity is next: Google says OpenAI models are coming soon to Google Antigravity and its Gemini tools for business. No date and no model list yet.
One bill: companies buy the models through Google Cloud Marketplace, so the cost lands on their Google Cloud invoice and counts toward existing spend deals.
Gemini app: nothing was announced for the regular Gemini app. This deal is about developers and businesses.

1. What Google and OpenAI announced

The deal: Google Cloud is adding OpenAI’s models to its model garden, the catalogue where businesses pick which AI models to build with. It already lists Gemini, Anthropic’s Claude and open models. Google says this makes Google Cloud the only big cloud provider offering all three leading closed AI models, alongside more than 200 others.

Why now: Reuters reports that OpenAI’s exclusive distribution deal with Microsoft ended in April, which opened the door to Google. OpenAI’s models will now be sold on all three major US cloud platforms.

2. The three GPT models

GPT-6 Astra: OpenAI’s top model in the lineup, aimed at hard coding, computer use, professional tasks and scientific research.

GPT-6.1 Sol: Google describes it as close to Astra in intelligence but cheaper, for agent-style coding, computer use and office work.

GPT-6 Luna: a fast, low-cost model for everyday work at scale.

Privacy: Google says customer prompts and outputs stay inside the customer’s chosen data boundary and are never used to train models. The OpenAI models run on dedicated Google Cloud servers, with zero data retention options and Confidential Compute listed as coming soon.

3. What it means for Antigravity on Googlebook

Coming soon: Google says OpenAI models will be available in Google Antigravity “coming soon”. It did not give a date, and neither company has said which GPT models Antigravity will get. 9to5Google expects Astra and Sol to be the likely picks, but that is a guess for now.

What Antigravity has today: the model menu already mixes Google’s Gemini models with Anthropic’s Claude models and the open GPT-OSS model, as we showed in our guide to Antigravity on Googlebook. 9to5Google says Claude Opus and Sonnet 4.6 are open to free, Plus and trial accounts until November 2, while the newer 5.5 versions need a Pro plan or higher.

Plans: Google has not said which Antigravity plans will include the GPT models. Given how Claude access is split between free and paid tiers, do not be surprised if the best GPT models end up behind a paid plan.

Our take

It is a little strange to see Google sell its biggest AI rival’s models, but for developers it is good news. Antigravity is becoming a place where you choose the best model for each job, not just a Gemini front end, and that makes it a stronger reason to code on a Googlebook. The open questions are which GPT models Antigravity gets and which plan you will need. We will update you when Google shares those details.
